International Cave Arts and Music Salons

The International Cave Arts and Music Salons promote and recognize excellent cave-related art, artists and musicians. They are open to everyone, regardless of caving affiliation or attendance at the Congress. The entries for each salon will be exhibited from 19-26 July 2009 at the International Congress of Speleology (ICS), although in some salons only the best entries will be shown. The highest awards for each salon will be presented, and a portrait of the winner shown, during the Congress Thursday evening Salon Awards Program.

ENTRIES - Rules of entry common to all salons are provided below, and additional unique requirements are provided on each salon's page. All entries must be the original work of the entrant, and must relate to caves or caving. Entries that incorporate the work of others without their permission, promote unsafe practices, violate UIS or NSS conservation policies, or may be detrimental to good relations with cave owners will not be accepted. Entries that have been exhibited in past ICS Salons cannot be entered again, but those that have been entered in national contests, including winners, may be entered in these international salons. Entering a salon constitutes permission for the ICS and NSS to display your entry and/or an image of it to the attendees at the Congress. Attendees will be advised by signage in all display areas that entries may not be photographed and/or reproduced in any manner. All entries will be handled and displayed with the utmost care, but the organizers cannot bear any responsibility for loss or damage, howsoever caused. Entrants bear the responsibility for insuring their own works if they deem this necessary.

INFORMATION TO BE INCLUDED WITH ENTRIES - Each salon has its own entry form, to be submitted along with, or in advance of the actual entry. Most salons request a digital portrait of the entrant, to be used in announcing the winners. Additional requirements may be noted on each salon's page and its entry form.

JUDGING - Entries are judged by an international panel on the basis of artistic and technical merit, impact, and "caver appeal." Some Salons are judged prior to the ICS and some during the ICS. The winners of all competitions, along with the names and credentials of the jurors, will be posted to the NSS Salons pages immediately following the Congress. Further rules and criteria are described on each salon's page or may be obtained directly from the chair of each salon.

RETURN OF ENTRIES - Entries will be returned to the artist if requested at the time of entry, unless otherwise specified in the salon rules. Entrants are encouraged to donate their entries to the UIS or the NSS. They may pick up their entries in the salon exhibit area on 26 July 2009 at the close of the salons. Specify in writing if you want someone else to pick up your entry at the ICS. Entries may be returned by mail if they are sent in reusable packaging materials and include the cost of postage and other special fees (registered post, insurance, etc.).

RIGHTS AND CONDITIONS
All entrants retain copyright and all moral and intellectual rights to their work. Credit and copyright notice will be included with all images displayed. Entrants bear the responsibility for insuring their own works if they deem this necessary. The ICS salons fully support the pro-imaging Bill of Rights for photography competitions. Digital copyright information will not be removed from any image; likewise, if no such digital information is included in an image, no information will be added by the salon. All photographic salon entrants are encouraged to include digital data in the Exchangeable image file format (EXIF), an explanation of which may be found here and in Wikipedia.

Salons may request certain limited usage rights for the purposes of recognizing the winners, providing media coverage of the Congress, or promoting the next such salon or contest. In the case of the UIS, these events occur every four years. All such rights are optional for each entrant and each entry.
