Enclosures
- A CD. Kindly include a CD with digital files of all your entries, and a digital file of a head-and-shoulders self-portrait for display and projection. The files should be in JPEG or TIF format, uncompressed and in the maximum size available.
- A brief CV or resume of about 100 words, describing your cave photography career, as well as your goals in
that field. This resume should be in English, and a translation into any of the other official UIS languages
(French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish) would be much appreciated. This resume will be displayed with your entries, but will not be seen by the judges prior to judging the entries.
- An
entry form. Please fill in the form online, print it, sign it, and enclose it with your entries.
- Return Instructions. If you wish your entries to be returned to you by mail, please provide return postage cost. If you are attending the Congress, you may collect your prints on 26 July 2009, or you may authorize a friend to collect them for you. If you do not include the cost of returning your entries to you, and if they are not collected on 26 July 2008, they will be donated to the NSS. Please use the entry form to state whether you wish your print(s) to be returned to you at your expense, collected by you or a friend, or donated to the NSS.
How to enter your print
- No photographer may enter more than ten (10) prints, of which no more than half may have been entered in any
national competition anywhere in the world.
- All prints must depict caves, cavers, or caving as the subject. Photos taken in sewers, tunnels, mines,
or other man-made environments will not be accepted. Photos of karst landscapes that do not include a cave will
not be accepted.
- There are nine (9) entry categories, of which eight (8) are for color prints:
- Black and White (sepia and other monochrome tints are OK)
- Close-up (camera was less than 12" or 30 cm from the subject when the photo was taken)
- Medium (camera was more than 12" or 30 cm from the subject, but less than 30' or 10 m, when the photo was taken)
- Large room or gallery (camera was more than 30' or 10 m from the subject)
- Entrance - can be taken at any distance, but some natural light or daylight must be in the print, and a cave entrance must be the subject of the print
- Vertical action print - must depict a caver or cavers on a rope or ladder, either ascending or descending in a cave
- Water - must depict a lake, a waterfall, a stream, or some water in a cave as the subject of the photograph
- Humor - the subject of the print should be funny
- Abstract - the photographer can use digitally manipulated subjects or other unusual photography, lighting, computer, or darkroom techniques to create a surreal, abstract, or very unusual and original print.
- To view examples of winning photographs in each of these categories,
- The Chairmen reserve the right to modify the above categories if some categories are oversubscribed, and to combine categories that have low numbers of entries. The Chairmen also reserve the right to change the category chosen by the photographer if, in their opinion, the photographer has not chosen correctly. The Chairmen will endeavor to contact the photographer by e-mail to communicate this change, and the reasons for it, prior to judging.
- The prints may be created digitally (using a computer) or traditionally (in a darkroom).
- Prints must measure at least 20 x 25 cm (8 x 10 inches), but be no larger than 45 x 60 cm (18 x 24 inches). Creative cropping is encouraged, so in the case of panorama prints, the print must have a minimum surface area of 645 cm2 (100 square inches) and a maximum surface area of 2,580 cm2 (400 square inches), and no dimension may be less than 15 cm (6 inches) or greater than 75 cm (30 inches).
- All prints must be mounted, but not framed. They may be matted at the discretion of the photographer. If a mat is used, it may not be larger than 50 x 75 cm (20 x 30 inches).
- All prints must be titled. The titles should be creative, such as "The Mysteries of Caving" or
"Spelean Beauty". Since the titles will be translated into other languages, photographers should
not use puns or wordplay, as this is difficult to translate effectively. The judges will award points for
titles that demonstrate originality or add depth or meaning to the print. The title of each print must be
clearly written in English on the
entry form. A translation of these titles into other languages would be appreciated, but is not mandatory. The title, and optional translations, must also be written clearly on the BACK of the mounted print. The salon chairmen will prepare title cards for each print so that the titles can appear in each of the official languages. These cards will be displayed next to the print. The print will be judged using its English title.
- The name or names of the photographers of the print must be written clearly on the back of each mounted print. In cases where two or more photographers collaborate and use a fictitious name, that name may appear in lieu of their real names, but not in conjunction with those names. The names of models and assistants should not be supplied.
- The name of the cave and country where the photo was taken may appear with the title, at the discretion of the photographer. There must not be any lettering on the print. There must be no digital "watermark" or copyright name on the print, and the print may not be signed on the front.
- The following information must appear on the back of each entry: name and address of the photographer, title of the print, entry category, an entry number assigned by the photographer, and copyright information.
Judging and Prizes
Judging will take place in the USA during May or June 2009 by a jury. Prints will also be judged by an international panel of judges in Texas, in advance of the UIS. However, if no suitably qualified judges are available in advance of the UIS, then the Chairmen will accept the decisions of the USA judges. Judges will be experienced and dedicated cavers, chosen for their knowledge of photography, artistic instincts, ability to be impartial, and prior salon judging experience. The judges will not be told the name of the photographer or his/her country of origin. Each print will be judged by the following four criteria:
- Technical merit (15 points)
- Artistic merit (15 points)
- Caver Appeal (10 points)
- Impact or originality (10 points)
For more information on these criteria, and for tips on what the judges look for, please read the NSS Print Salon Criteria page.
At least two awards will be made in each category; thus, about 18 prizes will be awarded on Thursday evening, the "Salon Award Program". If you will not be attending Salon Award Program, you should let the Chairmen know (on the entry form) who you would like to have accept your award, if you win. Cash and other prizes will accompany some of the awards.
Prints for Display Only
In addition to the ten (10) prints permitted for competition, you may offer up to five (5) more for display only. These prints will not be judged, only admired. However, if space is limited, the chairmen of the salon may be unable to display them. The deadline for the "display only" prints is 15 June 2009. Prints submitted for display must be mounted, but not necessarily titled or matted. They may also be prints that have been exhibited in other competitions. They may not be larger or smaller than the size requirements for those accepted for judging. If all or most of the space will be taken by entries received by 1 May 2009, a note to that effect will appear on this web page by 15 May 2009.
